Pro Makiwara

Depending on what type of martial art you study, you may, or may not, have heard of a makiwara. A makiwara is a padded post that has been used for decades in Traditional karate trainng. It was designed from the Okinawans. Much like a heavy duty punching bag, a makiwara affixes to the wall and is designed to help the artist develop their striking ability and toughens up the knuckles. If you do not have your body placed right and fail to execute the punch correctly, the punch will bounce right off of the target. If you are able to focus and hit the target in the right place, you will see a different reaction.

One of the unique things about a makiwara that makes it different from other pieces of martial art equipment is that it can be affixed to the wall, which means that it can be used in almost any dojo or home.
