That is exactly how the bo staff began, as a piece of wood found on the ground. Now, most bo staffs are made of either bamboo or a hard wood. They generally range from five to six feet long. The shorter you are, the smaller your bo staff should be, in order for you to be able to wield it well.
A bo staff is used as a weapon by using it as an extension of your arms. It helps you to deliver a strong strike with even the smallest of motions from your wrist. It excels as a defensive weapon and is able to block or deflect just about anything, from kicks to other weapons.
