Here are the 6 we find the most important:

Hand Wraps: Boxing hand wraps put on correctly are the key to avoiding hand injuries. The impact of striking a hard object such as a thick punching bag can be very damaging to your hands. When wrapping your hands, make sure to keep your fingers separated to allow the wraps to go in between them. Make sure not too wrap them too tight. Having them too tightly is a common error many novice boxers & kick boxers do . The thickness cushion around the knuckles should be smooth and tight. Make sure there are no wrinkles or uneven areas.

Boxing Gloves: Properly fitted boxing gloves should be snug and comfortable. Boxing gloves are the main training product in the sport of boxing. Boxing gloves are used to absorb the damage a punch that can potentially occur. Boxing gloves offer padding and are weighed in ounces, they range in 5-18oz. Most gloves that are from 5-12oz. are more known as boxing bag gloves. Most gloves that weigh 14oz. and up are known as sparring gloves. Boxing gloves can be made of leather or vinyl. Most vinyl boxing gloves are popular in 12oz and less. They are known to be popular for cardio kickboxing classes. Vinyl Cardio boxing gloves are great for women and younger children that are learning the sport of boxing/kick boxing. High end professional fighting boxing gloves are known to have a laced up closure. Laces should be tied tightly and securely. Prior to every match, the plastic ends are cut off, the gloves lightly layered with petroleum jelly.

Mouthpiece: You should use a mouthpiece that custom molds to your mouth. When it comes to protecting your jaws and teeth, there is no room for being cheap. Most children use the single mouth guard which protects the top layer teeth. This is easier for the person the breath. Older children 12 and up can use a double mouth guard which covers both top and bottom teeth. Its very important to always wear a mouth guard when sparring in any type of martial art.

Boxing Shoes: Boxing shoes are lighter, softer and offer much better ankle support compared to normal sneakers. Boxing shoes provide great balance, and keep you light on your feet. Boxing shoes also make it much easier to move around the ring. If you have trouble finding boxing shoes then you can also use wrestling shoes. They offer the same amount of support and balance.

Headgear: A boxing headgear should be fitted properly before sparring in the ring. By using a headgear that is improperly secured to your head and moves upon impact can be very dangerous. A headgear is just an extra piece of protection when fighting. Leather boxing head gears are know to last longer. They are also more expensive. For younger children, you can find a good quality vinyl boxing head gear that will do the job. Competitors can still get hurt and hit very hard to the head. Make sure you know and understand your sparring partner.

Punching bags - This is the item that you can practice all the various punches and kicks on. Their are different types of punching bags that serve different purposes. Their is a heavy bag which is usually 85 lbs and higher. The heavy bag is known not to swing around a lot. It's more of a punching to practice the fundamentals of the particular punch or kick. It's also known for absorbing hard strikes. The dancing bag is more of a bag to work on your movement and footwork around the swinging bag. The dancing bag is more of an advance bag for the fighter is practice various attacks as well as to practice his or her body movement. The muay thai heavy bag is a kick boxing bag made for allowing low (shin area) kicks. Most stand about 6 feet tall and can weigh from 120-145lbs. The muay thai bag is great for practicing lower kicks, knee strikes, & elbow attacks. This bag is not known to swing and rock around a lot. Another punch bag we can recommend is the Century Wavemaster bags. Their are about 2-5 different models of the wavemaster bags. The best selling one happens to be the Century XXL Wavemaster. We like this particular wavemaster because it's the thickest and offers the largest striking area. It's great for practicing low shin kicks. The xxl wavemaster can be use from ages 5 to adult which makes it versatile for large families. They are not a hanging bag like the 3 I just explained. They are know as a Free standing bag You fill their bases up with water or sand. The weight on the bottom can be from 65-210lbs. You can check out the assorted Century wavemasters at the section on this website.
