Kamas began as a way to cut long grass. They originated in Okinawa and look and had the same function as scythes. Okinawa was taken over by the Satsuma and it was decreed that to avoid an uprising, all weapons would be banned. Intelligent men realized that they could use the Kamas as weapons without alerting the military, and so began training to use the tool as a weapon.
Kamas are now used in a variety of different martial arts, and can be found in a variety of styles. Generally they are used by being grasped in the hand and moved in a circular motion in order to block against other weapons. They can also be used as an offensive weapon, utilizing the sharp blade of the Kama against a variety of other weapons.
The Kama is especially good at blocking and countering against a bow staff or a sword, because it is able to trap the weapon due to the curved blade in order to give the competitor a chance to strike.
